Meet Jo Farrell
Jo Farrell, the 2024 ACT Australian of the Year, is a trailblazer in the construction industry with nearly 30 years of experience. As a qualified carpenter, licensed builder, and certified building designer, Jo has led projects ranging from custom home builds to large-scale commercial developments.
Jo’s journey began in 1996 as an apprentice carpenter, and her expertise has taken her across the globe, including three years working on a Nuclear Decommissioning Project in Lithuania. Her depth of knowledge and hands-on experience make her an invaluable mentor for anyone looking to build confidence in the building and construction field.
In 2021, Jo spearheaded the Strathnairn Charity House project in Canberra—a landmark initiative designed, built, and sold entirely by women. This project raised over $500,000 for local charities and provided apprenticeships for 27 women.
As the founder of Build Like a Girl, Jo has dedicated herself to mentoring and empowering women in trades, breaking barriers, and creating opportunities for women to thrive in a traditionally male-dominated industry.
Her mission aligns perfectly with Get Handy Workshops: helping participants save money, make money, and build a brighter, more independent future with practical trade skills.
